Newham is reinstating its free bulky waste collection service from September, giving every household three collection slots a year. Each slot covers up to six large items, including furniture, mattresses, TVs, and white goods. Booking opens ahead of the September launch via the council website.
The service fulfils a manifesto commitment from Mayor Forhad Hussain and forms part of a broader crackdown on fly-tipping. Fines for illegal dumping have already doubled from £500 to £1,000, and the council is deploying its CCTV network to catch offenders in the act.
Everyone I speak to agrees that fly-tipping is a blight on our borough. Local people are sick of seeing selfish people dump their waste on our streets and expect someone else to deal with the mess. Those days are over.
Residents who would rather donate than dispose have options too. Good-quality furniture, white goods, and bric-a-brac can be collected from home for donation. The council website lists local reuse services including the TCL Reuse Centre. Jenkins Lane Reuse and Recycling Centre also accepts furniture, bikes, clothes, paint, and books for reuse.
