Newham proposes a no vehicles, no pedestrians rule for 21 roads around London Stadium
Montfichet Road, about a six-minute walk from Victory Park, is one of ten E20 roads Newham Council wants the power to close to cars and people on foot whenever signs go up. Objections have to reach the council by 18 November.
The others in E20 are Carpenters Road, Layard Street, Marshgate Terrace, Parkes Street, Sidings Street, Sweetwater Place, Turing Street, Waterden Road and Westfield Avenue. The full order covers 21 roads around the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and London Stadium, including stretches in E15, E9 and E3.
It is an anti-terrorism traffic order. On a signed road, nobody could enter in a vehicle, and no pedestrian could enter, leave or remain, unless a police constable or someone they authorise allows it. The notice, dated 28 October, gives no days, events or start date. The council says it drew the order up with the London Legacy Development Corporation, Transport for London, Tower Hamlets and Hackney.
Objections go in writing to the Acting Director of Highways, Parking and Transportation, London Borough of Newham, 3rd Floor West, Newham Dockside, 1000 Dockside Road, London E16 2QU, or by email to traffic.orders@newham.gov.uk, with the grounds for the objection. The council may publish or disclose them. The plans can be inspected by appointment on 020 3373 6415. Ask there which stretches and which event days the order is meant for, because the notice does not say.
