Heating season in East Village: is it your flat or the whole block?

East Village Hub 2 min read

The clocks go back on Sunday 25 October, and for most of us the heating goes on around then. East Village has no gas boilers. Heat and hot water come from a shared network, so a fault can be in your flat or in the whole block.

How heating works here

Heat for East Village is made at the King's Yard Energy Centre on Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and sent through insulated underground pipes to the buildings. Inside each home, a Heat Interface Unit (HIU) does the job a boiler would. East London Energy (ELE) supplies the heat and hot water, and handles billing and meters. It does not supply electricity.

Is it just you?

  • Check your neighbours first. If the flat next door has no heat or hot water either, it is probably the block or the network.
  • Check the Hub tracker. Heating outages shows reports from residents in your building and across E20. If others have reported, you do not need to wait for someone to post in a group chat.
  • Add your own report. It takes one tap and needs no account. More reports from one building help show the problem is shared.
  • Only your flat? That points to something inside your home, such as your HIU. That is a repair for your landlord.

Follow it

The heating tracker has a Follow switch under the verdict, so heating news reaches you without checking.

Is your bill normal?

There is no official typical bill for a heat network like ours. Is this normal? lets you add your monthly ELE bill without your name, flat or building. Once five neighbours have added theirs, it shows the range. If a bill looks wrong, the same page says who to raise it with.

Who to go to

The Hub does not hold phone numbers or process steps for your landlord or ELE, because they change. Use the official door for your home:
