Emergency Wildfire Alert

Andrew Jones 3 min read

The UK Government issued a Severe Emergency Alert on the evening of 14 August 2026, warning of a very high risk of wildfires across the country. In E20, temperatures reached 32°C through the day with mostly clear skies and low humidity - conditions that make the green spaces around East Village and the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park exceptionally vulnerable. Residents should treat this alert as applying directly to their neighborhood.

The Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and the network of parklands and meadows surrounding East Village have had little meaningful rainfall in recent weeks. Grass, scrub, and planted areas are tinder dry. In these conditions, a single spark - from a disposable barbecue, a discarded cigarette, or even a glass bottle acting as a lens in direct sunlight - can ignite a fire that spreads faster than people can safely evacuate. The park's open layout and the proximity of residential buildings make this a serious local concern, not just a national one.

The alert explicitly bans any activity that could start a fire. This includes disposable barbecues, firepits, garden incinerators, and fireworks. If you had plans for an outdoor barbecue this evening, please cancel them. The ban is not a guideline: emergency services are under significant pressure nationally, and a fire in or near QEOP would put both residents and firefighters at serious risk.

If you see fire or smoke - in the park, on a green space, or anywhere nearby - call 999 immediately. Do not attempt to tackle the fire yourself, even if it looks small. Wildfires in dry conditions can change direction and intensity within seconds. Move away from the area, keep others back, and follow any instructions from emergency services. You can also report concerns to the London Fire Brigade via their non-emergency line, but if there is any active fire or immediate risk, 999 is always the right call.
