Green Hold Stratford Olympic Park with 63%

Labour have lost Newham Council to No Overall Control.

Labour: 26 Seats (-38)

Newham Independents Party: 24 Seats (+24)

Green: 16 Seats (+14)

Newham Mayoral Election

Newham has elected Forhad Hussain as its new Labour mayor, with 25,538 votes.

Mehmood Mirza for Newham Independents Party took 20,234 votes. Areeq Chowdhury for the Greens received 18,999 votes.

Hussain said: "It is the honour of my life to be elected Mayor of Newham, the borough that made me. This is the beginning of a new chapter for the borough. Together we will build a Newham where every resident will be proud to call home."

He added: "The election matters because people deserve a choice. Democracy works when people are willing to step forward and serve. I start work next week with energy and determination to deliver for every part of the borough."

Hussain served as a Labour councillor in Plaistow North from 2010 to 2018, holding cabinet roles including Cabinet Member for Commercial Opportunities and Cabinet Member for Crime and Anti-Social Behaviour.

He will formally take up the role on Tuesday and will be asked to form an executive cabinet. He takes over from Labour's Rokhsana Fiaz, who served two full terms.

The Mayor of Newham is a directly elected council leader, responsible for all council services and appointing cabinet members with responsibility for specific areas.
