The clocks go back on Sunday. Here's the walk home after dark

East Village Hub 1 min read

The clocks go back one hour at 2am on Sunday 25 October. On Saturday the sun sets at about 5.50pm. By Monday it sets at 4.46pm, so for many of us the walk home from work or the station will be in the dark from next week.

Most people in the area say they feel safe. In Newham's last residents' survey, 90% of people in Stratford and West Ham said they feel safe in their area during the day. After dark that falls to 71%.

What the police were watching

Going into the ward panel on 15 October, where residents vote on what the neighbourhood police team works on next, Stratford Olympic Park had three priorities, set in July. Two name East Village outright: theft snatches and robberies "predominantly in the East Village area", and parcel theft. The third is phone theft on streets including Abercrombie Road, Celebration Avenue and Villiers Gardens.

Through the Park

The Park says it is open 24/7 and that most routes are well lit. Two things from its safety guide are worth knowing. Most lamp posts carry a number, so if you need help you can tell security exactly where you are. And some areas in the north of the Park are kept darker at night on purpose, for wildlife, so plan your route in advance.

If your phone is snatched

Call 999 if the thief is still nearby. Then tell your neighbours: report it on EVH so the phone theft tracker shows where it is happening. That is a heads-up for residents, not a police report. The stay-safe guide has the rest, including tracking or wiping it remotely and getting your network to block it.
